    This initial stretch takes cyclists through the heart of Central Otago's pioneering past. Pedaling along the old railway line, riders will be transported back in time, passing through charming landscapes adorned with relics of the region's mining history. The picturesque trail meanders gently through the countryside, offering a serene and pleasant ride that captures the essence of Central Otago's fascinating heritage.

  • As the trail winds its way from Lauder to Omakau, riders are treated to a captivating showcase of Central Otago's scenic splendor. Rolling through the golden tussock-covered hills and meandering alongside the meadows, the trail provides stunning panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes.

    Cyclists can enjoy the peaceful and relaxed ambiance, punctuated only by the occasional trill of native birds and the gentle rustling of the breeze through the wildflowers. This section's idyllic charm beckons riders to take their time and savor every moment of the breathtaking countryside.

  • The final stretch of the Central Otago Rail Trail unfolds with dramatic flair as it leads riders from Omakau to Middlemarch. Here, the trail enters the awe-inspiring Taieri Gorge, where the landscape changes dramatically, showcasing rugged gorges and the vast expanse of Central Otago's skies. The trail's path is flanked by soaring cliffs and bridges, adding an adventurous touch to the journey. Travelling along (and above!) the edge of the beautiful Lake Dunstan as the wonders of modern engineering connect you with the rich history of the region.

You will pass by historical Maori sites, early settler villages, and see the modern marvel of engineering that is the Clyde Dam.

  • From Clyde you head out over the Clyde Bridge then turn right and head down to meet the trail heading towards the Clyde Dam and Dunstan Arms Rowing Club. This section features New Zealand’s third largest hydro-dam – the Clyde Dam, in which the first power was generated in 1992.

    As you continue on to Halfway Hut, you will have plenty of picnic spots to stop at for a quick break. Closer to Halfway Hut you will find a short switch back section with tight corners and a good climb/descent.

  • This section requires more attention and skill, as has narrow sections and more gradient. It’s also the section with the highest point of the trail, with magnificent views to take in. The Hugo suspension bridge is in the middle of this section. Coffee Afloat awaits your arrival at the Cairnmuir Gully, with yummy coffee and a selection of treats.

    Fueled up, you will start to see the first of the bluff bridges. you will cycle at the base of the stonework faces of the Cairnmuir slide, a unique feature high on the slopes above the lake.

    As you continue towards Cornish Point cycling though vineyards and olive groves you come to Carrick Winery & Restaurant, pop off your bike and enjoy a glass of wine with a bit of lunch prior to heading towards Bannockburn Inlet, a popular rest stop with a designated swimming area.

  • The trail continues, taking you under the Bannockburn bridge as you follow Lake Dunstan to Cromwell Heritage Precinct. Stop to explore the boutique galleries, stores, and food and drink before the trail continues to Smiths Way.

    This stretch is filled with easily accessible sections of the lake for picnics, swims, and views of the water and its activities.

The region’s rich modern, pioneering and Maori historical stories are integrated along the way, some of which are brought to life in the Clyde and Cromwell Historical Precinct.

The Lake Dunstan Trail extends and complements the well-established Great Rides in Central Otago, providing a key link with the Otago Central Rail Trail and the Roxburgh Gorge Trail.

The Lake Dunstan Trail is a purpose built 55km cycling and walking trail that traverses some of Central Otago’s most dramatic landscapes & scenery. It’s New Zealand’s latest Great Ride and has quickly become one of the most popular trails in the country.

However, a large part of the trail is in remote terrain with some challenging grade 3 sections only suitable for confident cyclists.

  • The first section of the Roxburgh Gorge Trail begins in charming Alexandra. Be enthralled by the scenic beauty of this stretch, characterised by the impressive cliffs that tower over the Clutha River. The trail winds its way through narrow gorges, offering a unique and adventurous riding experience. As you pedal along this part, keep an eye out for the abundant native flora and fauna that add to the natural allure of the landscape.

  • As you gently glide across Lake Roxburgh from Doctors Point, the trail continues from Shingle Creek. This section treats riders to some of the most awe-inspiring views of the Roxburgh Gorge. The turquoise waters of the Clutha River glisten below, while the towering rock formations stand as silent witnesses to the river's timeless flow. The well-maintained track makes for a smooth ride, allowing cyclists to fully immerse themselves in the tranquility of the surrounding nature.

  • This leg of the Roxburgh Gorge Trail takes riders from Shingle Creek to Lake Roxburgh Village.

    Here, the trail opens up to offer expansive vistas of the serene lake and its surrounding landscapes. As you approach the end, take a moment to savor the peaceful ambiance of the village and perhaps explore the local amenities.

Experiencing the Clutha River and Lake Roxburgh from the hillside and the water makes this trail one of the more unique and memorable experiences of Central Otago.

  • Meander along the Mighty Clutha River as you pass the tracks and signs of early mining in the region. As you travel further, you will be wowed by the expansive orchards, taking advantage of the wonderful weather the region is known for.

    Pop across the Roxburgh Bridge into town for a break, or continue on towards Pinders Pond for a safe swimming spot. This section is littered with incredible rock formations carved out by the rivers, more orchards, and stunning outlooks towards Millers Flat.

  • A marked change from the previous section, as you travel through the remote Beaumont Gorge. You will be riding along a mix of quiet, back country roads and old railway routes until you reach Beaumont Bridge. You have the option of a short detour up to the Lonely Graves as you continue the remainder of this leg to Beaumont.

  • Leaving Beaumont, you climb towards the high point of the trail, where you will be greeted by a dedicated cycle tunnel to mark the beginning of a long downhill towards Evans Flat.

    You will meander through rolling farmland, and past numerous reminders of the many people that made the area their home over the centuries.

    You will finish your ride in the historic town of Lawrence, the first gold rush town in Otago.

  • Discover the newest gem on our trails! The 62km extension from Lawrence to Waihola, opened on August 25th, 2023, brings even more adventure and variety to your journey.

    1.6km of boardwalk through lakeside wetlands: Pedal your way through a stunning, immersive experience in a protected natural wonder.

    Two 42-meter-long suspension bridges (Toko East and Toko West): Glide above the ground, taking in breathtaking views and adding a dash of excitement to your ride.

    This trail extension promises an ever-changing landscape, ensuring your ride is packed with the natural beauty and unique experiences.

    Allow Kiwi Journeys to organise a night or two in Dunedin City for you. Experience the Scottish architecture, amazing food options, and cycle The Loop around the Otago Harbour, visiting some of the best attractions in Dunedin along the way. The distance is approximately 32km from Portobello to Port Chalmers.

The Chinese miners played a significant yet often overlooked role in New Zealand's gold rush history, particularly along the Clutha Gold Cycle Trail. In the 1860s, they arrived in search of fortune, facing discrimination and harsh conditions.

Along the Clutha River, remnants of their camps and workings still echo their presence. Their story serves as a reminder of the multicultural tapestry woven into New Zealand's heritage and the sacrifices made in pursuit of prosperity. The trail preserves their legacy, honoring their vital contribution to the nation's history.
